Trust the kremlin to violate agreements and treaties.

Its track record tells the truth.

Spoiler: This is another post translating one of my letters to newspapers. It was published by Sydöstran 16 July 2024. It is about the kremlin violating all agreements and treaties it enters. And the lies it spews. The letter is inspired by this database of kremlin election interfering, lies, murders, and treaty violations by Economists for Ukraine. Anyway, in the letter I argue that it is not meaningful to advocate for peace or a cease-fire where one of the parties is the Kremlin. The fascist regime will use the time of a cease-fire to build up new forces, only to later violate agreements and launch a renewed attack on Ukraine in order to carry out more gang rapes against defenseless women.

As everyone knows, there has been a tsunami of war crimes in russian-occupied areas of Ukraine. Mass murders, gang rapes, torture, mass deportations and child abductions are everyday occurrences in the kremlin's genocidal campaign.

In addition, we know that the kremlin constantly lies and always breaks agreements. Therefore, we can never tell Ukraine to negotiate away parts of its country. As a matter of fact, the kremlin lies more than most other governments in the world. Both to its own citizens but also to foreign citizens about their governments and the key political issues.

The kremlin lies much more than the average of World governments.

That the Putin regime always lies and belongs to the most frequent liars of all authoritarian regimes is evident from a project, Varieties of Democracy, which is run by the political science department at the University of Gothenburg. On the project's website, the visitor can compare how different countries spread misinformation about other countries to their citizens. And as noted above, much more than most other governments.

Only China, Myanmar, Nicaragua, Syria and Venezuela, lie more to foreign citizens about their governments and policies.

Last year, only five countries were “better” than the kremlin in spreading lies about other countries to their citizens, China, Myanmar, Nicaragua, Syria and Venezuela. In addition, the kremlin constantly lies to its own citizens, and the kremlin also has the help of the political parties that pretend to participate in the elections that are arranged to consolidate the dictator's power.

Economists for Ukraine have put together a database with verified russian lies, violations of treaties, and more. Against Ukraine, the kremlin has broken at least the following agreements. The 1994 Budapest Memorandum in which Ukraine's independence and territorial integrity were guaranteed by, among others, the kremlin.

Three years later, the countries entered into the russian-Ukrainian Friendship Agreement. In the agreement, the countries recognized the inviolability of the common border, pledged to respect each other's territorial sovereignty, and pledged not to use violence against each other as a means of resolving conflicts.

In the same year, 1997, the countries entered into an agreement where the russian Black Sea Fleet was allowed to rent a naval base in Sevastopol. The agreement also included an assurance to respect Ukraine's sovereignty. The agreement was renewed in 2010 under the name Kharkiv Pact.

In connection with the invasion of Donbas, the kremlin entered and broke Minsk I and Minsk II. According to the agreements, Ukraine would, among other things, be guaranteed the right to control its borders and all foreign troops would be withdrawn from Ukraine.

As is well known, the kremlin completely ignored this. The kremlin retained control of eleven border crossings between the countries. The OSCE was only able to monitor two of these, but was still able to observe between 2014 and 24 February 2022 that roughly 30,000 soldiers in russian uniforms crossed the border. In addition, there were those who traveled in vehicles with covered windows and were transported by rail over the unguarded railway crossings between the two countries.

Furthermore, the kremlin has violated the Helsinki Agreement, the UN Charter, the INF Treaty with the US, the Sochi Agreement with Georgia and more.

Everyone who demands Ukraine to negotiate a peace knows that the kremlin violates all agreements and attacks again in the future.

It is therefore not serious to advocate for peace or a cease-fire of a conflict where one of the parties is the kremlin. The fascist regime will use the time of a cease-fire to build up new forces, only to later violate agreements and launch a renewed attack on Ukraine in order to carry out more gang rapes against defenseless women.

Those who call themselves peace movements in Sweden are very well aware of that. Yet they call for "peace".
